about me

I'm Liesl.  I live in my kitchen.  Cooking, baking, teaching my toddler to cook, doing projects, etc.  Basically, we all live in the kitchen.  We all cook together here.  It works.  For instance, I'm terrible at flipping pancakes and knowing when to open the waffle iron, but I make the batter.  Jeff luckily is awesome at pancake flipping and knowing when to take out the waffles.  He also makes AMAZING crepes (lucky me!) and chocolate mousse.  I'll try to get him to guest post and add his recipes.

I have a massive sweet tooth, but I try to make recipes that aren't massively unhealthy.  Sometimes it can just involve using whole wheat flour instead of AP flour, or substituting applesauce for oil.  Whatever.  I'm all about not feeling guilty for the food I eat.

If you've already seen my recipes, you'll notice a lot of sweet items, and a lot of vegetable dishes.  I looove vegetables.  Everyone in the house does. I don't know how I ended up with a toddler who steals veggies out of my sandwiches, but I'm ecstatic about it!

I am the sole vegetarian living in a house with two meat eaters, and a baby who tries to devour anything he can get his hands on.  I have no problems with meat, and I do cook it.  I really trying trying new recipes involving meat (we mostly do chicken) but I try to focus on the vegetable because we all like them, they are the healthiest parts of our meals, and I feel like they are so easy to overlook.  I know too many people who just microwave frozen veggies and serve them plain.  How boring is that?  Saute some carrots, add some seasonings...presto!  Something you'd actually want to eat.

I'm trying to pass on my love of all things kitchen related to the kiddos.  If Liam asks if we can make muffins I ask "what flavor?"  He loves to help me measure and stir.  Kids are more interested in eating food that they had a hand in making.  I don't give in and let him make "cupcake muffins" like he asks for every day, but if he wants to help me make ice cream, I'll look for a healthier version to make.

Basically, it's about balance, a happy family, and yummy foods.  Yeah, that's my random ramble and I'm sticking to it.  :)

Meet my helpers:

Liam loves to help me measure and mix.  He loves smoothies and squeezy fruit especially.

Jack likes hanging out on the counter and keeping me company while I cook.  He loves to watch everything and giggle.

Thanks for joining me!  Please feel free to drop me a line asking for specific types of recipes.  I love trying new ideas!
